Things to Do in Bromley

The borough of Bromley may be small, but it’s ripe with fun things to do for travelers and families of all backgrounds and tastes. From man-made tunnels to parks, theatre, shopping and animal watching, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Bromley.

Chislehurst Caves

Located two miles from Bromley’s city center, the Chislehurst Caves is a fun place to bring the entire family. The 22-mile series of tunnels are man-made, and were once used as flint and chalk mines.

The mine dates back to at least 1250, and was used as an air raid shelter during World War II.

Entrance to the cave is permitted through lamp-lit guided tour only. Tours run on the hour every hour, and last about 45 minutes.

There’s no need to book ahead to tour the caves, and guests can take advantage of free car and coach parking.

For a fun, family-friendly activity, the Chislehurst Caves is a must-see.

Churchill Theatre

For an evening of entertainment, make plans to visit the Churchill Theatre. The theatre is one of the top attractions in Bromley, and the venue hosts a number of excellent productions throughout the year, including concerts.

The theatre opened its doors in 1977, and seats 781 people.

Tickets for shows can be purchased online, over the phone or in person at the box office. The theatre also has a bar and a restaurant, so guests can enjoy a meal and drinks before or after the show.

High Elms Country Park

Offering 250 acres of countryside and a 150-acre golf course, the High Elms Country Park is a nature-lover’s paradise.

The 400-acre property forms the High Elms Estate, which was once the home of the Lubbock family. Located 15 miles from downtown London, the park sits along the Thames basin.

Guests are free to explore the nature centre, woodlands, formal gardens, ice well and the wildflower meadows.

The Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms is also located on the property, which boasts a visitors centre, café, and meeting rooms.

Christmas Tree Farm

Located in Charles Darwin’s Village of Downe home, the Christmas Tree Farm is another family-friendly activity. Darwin penned his famous Origin of Species book while living in the home.

The farm is open all winter long (weather permitting), and guests can still feed and see the resident animals.

The Christmas Tree Farm is home to several animals, including ducks, goats, cows, llamas, donkeys, ponies, alpaca and sheep.

The farm also has a kitchen and tea rooms.

Intu Bromley

If you’re in need of some retail therapy, visit the Intu Bromley, once known as The Glades. The mall is home to dozens of stores, and offers a number of services, including free Wi-Fi and a lift.

The building houses 135 stores, and boasts a floorspace that stretches 464,000 square feet. Some of the mall’s top shops include H&M, Disney Store, French Connection, Zara, Apple Store and more.

With stores to fit every budget and need, a trip to Intu Bromley is worth the effort.

Church House Gardens

Located on Church Road, the Church House Gardens offers an afternoon of peace and tranquility just outside the busy centre of town.

Guests are free to enjoy the expansive ornamental gardens as well as the lake, play area and sports facilities.

Abel Moysey constructed the gardens after leasing the land from the Bishop of Rochester. Over the years, the gardens have undergone some major changes, particularly during the Second World War.

The Church House Gardens spans 11 acres, and features a tree trail, rose beds, children’s play areas, rockery, lake, amphitheater, skateboard park and more.

Crystal Palace Park Dinosaurs

The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs park is great fun for the whole family. Located in Crystal Park, the attraction is free for all guests, and is open daily.

The dinosaurs section of the park features large statues of these prehistoric creatures.

Owned and managed by the London Borough of Bromley, the park offers a number of basic conveniences as well as caring services.
